Community Spotlight: Meet recording artist GIN from Los Angeles, California.

Today, we're happy to share with you our conversation with recording artist GIN from the Los Angeles, California.
We wanted to get to know a little bit more about who she is, how she got into the music industry, and where she's going on her creative journey. Here's how it went:

Thanks for taking the time to chat with us GIN! We're excited to have you as our next feature and learn more about you as a musician. Let's start this off with you sharing exactly what it was that initially drew you to your craft, and how has your journey unfolded since then?
GIN: I always been a fan of music since I was kid. Hip-hop was my first love. I fell in love with the music, culture and style and when I got of age I started going to concerts and underground hip-hop shows and became a promoter. I started promoting and booking my own events and eventually started my own booking agency GSBookings in 2010. I booked hip-hop artists locally and internationally. Then I realized that I should also focus on myself as an artist and released my first EP My Lyrical Expression EP in 2012 followed up with the Dream Getting EP in 2013 and my first album Spiritual Bars in 2018. Now in 2024, I am working on my 5th Independent Album C'est La Vie set to release in 2025.

Can you share some insights into your creative process? Where do you find inspiration, and how do you translate that into your work?
GIN: My creative process starts with the beats and production. I listen for beats that I like and that I can listen to over and over again. Then I start writing based on the mood of the song. For example, a love or friendship theme. I start to reflect on emotions and/or experiences that I have been through that can match the song.

What projects are you currently working on, and what excites you the most about them?
GIN: I am currently working on my 5th Independent Album C'est La Vie which I plan to release in 2025. What excites me the most is to share my new music.

Looking back on your career so far, what would you consider to be your proudest achievement or most memorable moment?
GIN: My proudest moment is touring South Africa. Touring in cities such as Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and Pietermaritzburg. The last time I toured SA was last year in Durban and I performed at one of the biggest festivals. It was a great feeling to see people sing the lyrics to my song "Elevate."

How do you navigate challenges and setbacks in your field, and what advice would you give to aspiring creatives facing similar obstacles?
GIN: I look for people who support me and actually care about my career. For example, if I meet a DJ I ask if he or she can play my music and sometimes they will and sometimes they won't. I just like to see how people react when I share with them that I am an artist and that I make music. Sometimes it's favorable and sometimes it isn't. I go for the people who support and keep it moving!

In an industry constantly evolving, how do you stay innovative and relevant while maintaining your unique voice/style?
GIN: Great Question! I like to listen to beats since music is constantly evolving. So, I use whatever sounds dope to me. For example, I been doing Amapiano and Hip-Hop and I also do Afrobeat and Afrotech. I stay true by keeping my same style but on evolving music.

Can you talk about any collaborations or partnerships that have been particularly meaningful or impactful for you?
GIN: I think the most meaningful collaborations I have had so far is working with T-Man SA and DJ Chase. Both producers were introduced to me by my friend Bambo who was a manager and worked with both artists. He helped me so much and believed in me. Unfortunately, Bambo passed away in 2022 due to Covid. So, he is not present anymore to hear my new music, see my videos, or watch me perform. However, he connected me, and I am forever grateful that he put me on the South African Amapiano market.

What do you hope audiences or consumers take away from your work, and what impact do you aspire to make in your industry?
GIN: My hope is that the audience is able to identify with my music and have a positive experience. The impact that I want to make in this industry is to be yourself and be free. Do what makes you happy.

Lastly, what message or piece of wisdom would you like to share with your fans, or anyone inspired by your journey?
GIN: Focus on yourself and focus on things that make you happy.
